Matthew, in my humble opinion, the best performance in a leading role by an actor this year was delivered by Colin Firth in a shattering film I saw last night at the Chelsea Cinemas in Manhattan by Tom Ford, titled A SIMPLE MAN. The British actor was quietly devastating as a gay professor harboring grief and other issues. If he does not receive at least a nomination or some critics' love it would be a major injustice. A SIMPLE MAN ha snow just enter my top ten list in a big way.
Nonetheless, not to steer the comment away from what you support there, I would agree that Cage was extraordinary, and his performance in BAD LIEUTENANT is surely one of the best of the year by any barometer of measurement.
