The Field Narrows

AMPAS announced today that 7 films have been narrowed down to compete for Best Makeup and Best Visual Effects nominations.

The makeup shortlist is:
  • “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
  • “The Dark Knight”
  • “Hellboy II: The Golden Army”
  • “The Reader”
  • “Synecdoche, New York”
  • “Tropic Thunder”
  • “The Wrestler”
And visual effects:
  • “Australia”
  • “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
  • “The Dark Knight”
  • “Hellboy II: The Golden Army”
  • “Iron Man”
  • “Journey to the Center of the Earth”
  • “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”
There can only be three nominations in each category. I'm thinking Benjamin Button, Hellboy II, and either Tropic Thunder or The Reader for Best Makeup, and Benjamin Button, Hellboy II, and Iron Man for Best Visual Effects.

I know HELLBOY has its fans, but a win for either SYNCHDOCHE, NEW YORK or BENJAMIN BUTTON in makeup would be well-deserved, as in both instances the aging is a large part of both film's thematics. on strictly a physical level, both are very impressive as well.
